Does anyone have a super simple coleslaw recipe?
I’m helping to make a barbecue chicken dinner tonight and my contribution will be the coleslaw. I only have a small collection of ingredients: bagged coleslaw mix, red cabbage, Hellman’s mayo, apple cidar vinegar, raw onion, celery salt, a few other seasonings, and salt and pepper. Does anyone have some good simple coleslaw recipes I can make with these ingredients? Thanks!
Thanks to all who gave me these awesome coleslaw recipes! I’m going to be using some of them, definitely!

Try this:
Bag of coleslaw mix
2 t mustard
3 t vinegar
1/4 t celery salt
1/2 t celery seed (if you’ve got it. Will be fine without)
2T white sugar
mayonnaise until the right consistency (probably about 1/2 to 3/4 c )
I make it all the time and it’s a little sweet, a little tangy and absolutely perfect!

I just guess at mine. Go to and type “easy coleslaw” or even just “coleslaw” into the search box. The recipes there are submitted by regular folks who actually use them, so they work.

My wife just uses cabbage, carrots, and Miracle Whip. Seems like you should put some mayo in the coleslaw mix and then taste it to see if it needs seasoning, but I doubt if it will. Adding the red cabbage shouldn’t hurt it and make it look a little better.

You just listed all the basic ingredients in creamy coleslaw. I used to work at popular BBQ restaurant and here was our recipe for the slaw dressing.
1 gallon mayo
4 cups cider vinegar
4 cups sugar
3/4 cup celery salt
1/4 kosher salt
1/4 black pepper
12 oz fine dice onions
You’d need to scale this down considerably, but you get the basic idea. Mix all the ingredients above and mix just enough with the slaw mix till it’s wet. Keep in mind that the salt will pull water out of the vegetables and it will get wetter as it sits.

I just combine mayo, water it down with a bit of milk and through in parsley, pepper, a pinch of lemon juice (if you don’t have it, no big deal), a pinch of garlic (or garlic powder), and believe it or not, about a tsp of white sugar. If you have paprika, throw a few dashes of that in too. The key is the sugar and a healthy dose of pepper. Toss with the bagged coleslaw and you’re set! Enjoy!

I can’t help you with those ingredients, but the next time you do coleslaw, just buy a head of cabbage and a jar of Marzetti’s cold slaw dressing. Shred the cabbage, pour in the dressing – a little at a time until you get the consistency you are looking for – and add celery seed, at least a teaspoon, more if it looks as if it needs it. Very simple – guaranteed to please.

buy a bag of that slaw mix at the grocery store where they have the bagged salads, mix in some mayo, dash of red wine vinegar until it’s a moist as you like, salt and pepper and pineapple chunks (drained) and golden raisins … so easy and so so good!
